Toyota Hilux: reading the VIN

Almost every Hilux in this region was built in Thailand, and the WMI says so. What it does not say is where the truck was sold, and that distinction matters more on the Hilux than on almost anything else.

Is a Toyota Hilux GCC spec?
The honest answer, before anything else on this page.

GCC specification is decided per vehicle, not per model. Two cars of the same model and the same year, built in the same factory in the same week, can go to different markets. So no page can tell you whether yours is a Gulf car, and this one does not try. What it can do is show you exactly what your own VIN encodes and where that stops.

MR0 tells you the truck was built in Thailand. It does not tell you where it was sold, and the decoder never treats a plant country as a market.

What this decoder reads from a Toyota Hilux VIN
Specific to this model, not to the brand.

The Hilux is the model that makes the plant-is-not-market rule concrete. MR0 is Toyota Motor Thailand, and the same Thai line supplies the Gulf, Australia, Africa, southeast Asia and Europe. A tool that reads the build country as the sales market will confidently tell you a Gulf Hilux is a Thai-market truck. This decoder will not, and there is a test that fails the build if anyone makes plant country mean market. Within the descriptor, position 4 separates the pre-facelift Revo from the 2020 update: H for the 2015 to 2020 trucks and K for 2020 onward, both on the 2GD-FTV 2.4 turbodiesel.

What the VIN cannot tell you here
Stated because a decoder that never says this is not worth trusting.
  • Single cab and extra cab Revo descriptors are not tabled.
  • Petrol Hilux variants are not tabled.
  • Earlier Vigo generation trucks return no model.

A VIN describes how a vehicle was built. It cannot describe where it was shipped, and no decoder anywhere changes that. The free GCC spec check reads your VIN, gives a verdict with a certainty score and the evidence behind it, and lists the physical and documentary checks that settle what the VIN cannot, starting with the GSO conformity lookup. The full VIN decoder returns every attribute the decode resolves, and the Toyota page explains the scheme above position by position.

Common questions

My Hilux VIN starts MR0. Does that mean it is a Thai-market truck?

No. MR0 is Toyota Motor Thailand, which is where the truck was built. Toyota supplies the Gulf, Australia, Africa and Europe from that same plant, so the build country tells you nothing about the sales market. This is one of the most common mistakes made about Hilux VINs.
