Toyota Fortuner: reading the VIN

The Fortuner is one of the most common SUVs on these roads, and until 12 August 2026 its VIN decoded to the make and nothing else. The cause was a defect in our own table rather than a gap in the data.

Is a Toyota Fortuner GCC spec?
The honest answer, before anything else on this page.

GCC specification is decided per vehicle, not per model. Two cars of the same model and the same year, built in the same factory in the same week, can go to different markets. So no page can tell you whether yours is a Gulf car, and this one does not try. What it can do is show you exactly what your own VIN encodes and where that stops.

MR0 and MR1 are Toyota Motor Thailand and MHF is Toyota's Indonesian plant. All three supply many markets from the same lines, and the decoder never reads a build country as a sales market. Where position 10 carries the filler 0 the VIN proves only that the vehicle was not built to the American model-year rule, and where it carries a real year code it says nothing about market at all.

What this decoder reads from a Toyota Fortuner VIN
Specific to this model, not to the brand.

This page exists because of a bug fix rather than new data, and it is worth saying so on the page. The two Fortuner descriptors were written into the Toyota table in August 2026 and keyed with the three plants they cover, MR0 and MR1 in Thailand and MHF in Indonesia, collapsed into the single string MR0 slash MR1 slash MHF. That field is only ever read three characters at a time, so the key could never match anything and both rows sat unreachable from the day they shipped. They are now one entry per plant. Within the descriptor, position 5 carries the engine: X is the 2TR-FE 2.7 litre four cylinder, which makes the vehicle a TGN51, and U is the 1GR-FE 4.0 litre V6, which makes it a GGN50 or GGN51. The Fortuner is also one of the few export Toyotas that does carry a real model year at position 10, unlike the Land Cruiser and the Hilux. There is a catch in that, and this decoder corrects it: the Fortuner descriptor puts a digit at position 7, which sends the standard thirty year rule into the wrong cycle, so a 2010 car reads as a 1980 one until the year is checked against the production window.

Codes this decoder resolves
Descriptors the decoder resolves, one row per plant. Every row is marked provisional and served at lower confidence, deliberately: these rows had never once executed before the key was repaired, and no confirmed Fortuner VIN sits behind them.

What the VIN cannot tell you here
Stated because a decoder that never says this is not worth trusting.
  • Nothing on this page has been checked against a real Fortuner. The rows had never executed before the fix and no confirmed VIN backs them, which is why they are served at lower confidence rather than promoted to the confirmed table.
  • Only the two AN50 and AN60 petrol descriptors are tabled. The diesel Fortuner and the 2015 AN160 generation return no model.
  • No trim or grade. The descriptor separates the engine, not the specification ladder.

A VIN describes how a vehicle was built. It cannot describe where it was shipped, and no decoder anywhere changes that. The free GCC spec check reads your VIN, gives a verdict with a certainty score and the evidence behind it, and lists the physical and documentary checks that settle what the VIN cannot, starting with the GSO conformity lookup. The full VIN decoder returns every attribute the decode resolves, and the Toyota page explains the scheme above position by position.

Common questions

Does a Toyota Fortuner VIN show the model year?

Usually yes, which makes the Fortuner unusual among export Toyotas: the Land Cruiser and the Hilux carry a filler digit where the year would be. Where a Fortuner carries a real year character at position 10 the decoder reports it. One correction is applied first. The Fortuner descriptor has a digit at position 7, which pushes the standard thirty year rule into the 1980 to 2009 cycle, so a 2010 car would otherwise read as 1980.

How do I tell a 2.7 Fortuner from the 4.0 V6 in the VIN?

Position 5. X is the 2TR-FE 2.7 litre four cylinder and U is the 1GR-FE 4.0 litre V6, which is also the difference between the TGN51 and the GGN50 or GGN51 chassis codes.
