The problem with model names
A model name is a marketing decision and it changes for marketing reasons. A chassis code is an engineering decision and it changes when the engineering does. In this market the gap between the two is unusually wide, because so many cars here are grey imports or long-lived models that outlived several renamings.
- A Nissan Pathfinder can be an R50 body-on-frame truck, an R51 ladder-frame car or an R52 unibody crossover. Three vehicles, one name, essentially no shared parts.
- The same Nissan saloon is a Sunny here, an Almera in Europe, a Sentra in America and a Pulsar or Sylphy elsewhere. One chassis code, five names.
- A Mercedes M-Class became a GLE in 2015. The chassis series did not notice: the W166 spans both names.
- A Mercedes Vito is also a Viano, a V-Class, an EQV and, in North America, a Metris. All W447.
- A Toyota Land Cruiser covers everything from a 79 series pickup to a J300 luxury SUV. The reference the rest of the internet uses answers a bare "Land Cruiser" for the whole 70 family.
Where the chassis code sits in a VIN
This is manufacturer-specific, which is the entire reason a general VIN decoder struggles with it. There is no standard position.

Nissan's export layout is the most generous scheme in this decoder. It spells the chassis code out in three consecutive characters, so once you know to look at positions 7 to 9 you can read it off the registration card without any tool at all. The trade is that those same positions cost it the check digit, and position 10 goes to a destination code instead of a year. Nissan gave you the field a parts counter actually wants and took away the two a decoder normally reports.
Why this matters more here than elsewhere
Two reasons specific to this market. First, a large share of vehicles here were never sold in the United States, so the reference database almost every free VIN decoder is built on has no pattern for them and returns a make and nothing else. Second, the models that dominate the roads here are exactly the long-lived, multi-generation, multi-name ones: the Land Cruiser 70 series has been in production since 1984, the Patrol Y61 continued in this region for years after it ended elsewhere, and the Hiace runs across two generations that share a name and little else.
In that environment a chassis code is not a technicality. It is the difference between the right part and a returned one.
Common questions
Where is the chassis code in a VIN?
It depends entirely on the manufacturer, because there is no standard position for it. On an export Nissan it is spelled out literally at positions 7 to 9. On a Mercedes it is at positions 4 to 6 as the Baureihe. On a rest-of-world BMW it is inside the four-character type code at positions 4 to 7. On a Toyota it has to be derived from the descriptor, and on older Toyotas it is computed rather than looked up at all.
Is the chassis number the same as the VIN?
In everyday use in this region, yes. The chassis number printed on a UAE registration card is the same 17 character VIN stamped on the vehicle. The chassis code is a different thing: a shorter manufacturer designation such as Y61 or W210 that identifies the platform and generation rather than the individual car.
