BMW VINs outside America: the type code at positions 4 to 7

A European or Gulf BMW gets three characters into a normal VIN decoder and stops. The reason is specific and fixable, and the field it cannot read is the one that answers everything.

Is a BMW GCC spec?
The honest answer, before anything else on this page.

GCC specification is decided per vehicle, not per model. Two cars of the same model and the same year, built in the same factory in the same week, can go to different markets. So no page can tell you whether yours is a Gulf car, and this one does not try. What it can do is show you exactly what your own VIN encodes and where that stops.

How BMW builds a VIN outside America
The scheme, and why a general decoder struggles with it.

Feed a European BMW to the American reference and it reports the make, the plant, and then two complaints: unused positions 5, 6 and 7, and an invalid character at position 10. Both complaints are correct about the American rules and wrong about the car.

Positions 4 to 7 are the BMW type code, the Typschluessel, four characters that resolve model, chassis, body and engine at once. EN11 is an E46 Touring 320i. The American reference has no idea, because BMW never filed these cars there.

Position 10 is the literal digit 0. Not a year, not a member of the year alphabet. The model year is genuinely not in the VIN, and the decoder returns nothing rather than promoting a production window into a year it cannot know.

The BMW type code, or Typschluessel
Four characters that resolve model, chassis, body and engine in one field. This is exactly the field the American reference cannot read, because BMW never filed these cars with the American regulator. On a US-market BMW positions 4 to 7 are not the plain type code, so the lookup only runs when the rest-of-world marker is present.

A genuine check digit
Europe does not mandate one, but BMW computes a conforming mod-11 digit anyway. Every sampled European BMW and MINI validates, which turns this into a free typo detector on exactly the VINs where there is otherwise least to say.

Read from BMW's own filed plant letters. Where a letter means different plants for BMW and for Rolls-Royce, the decoder keeps separate tables rather than one that is right half the time.

What this decoder covers, and what it does not

955 type codes across the E36, E39, E46, E53, E60, E70, E90, E91, E92, F10, F15, F20, F25, F30 and G30. Two-character prefix matching is deliberately not implemented: type codes are reused across chassis generations, so a prefix match would confidently name the wrong car.

  • The G series after the G30, meaning the G20, G21, G05, G01 and G11, is not covered. An unknown type code returns no model rather than a guess.
  • The i series electric cars are not covered.
  • The 955 type codes themselves have never been independently verified against real VINs. The plant letters and the overall structure have been, against BMW's own filings.

Common questions

Why does my BMW VIN show no model year?

Because a rest-of-world BMW does not have one in the VIN. Position 10, which carries the year on an American car, is the literal digit 0 on a European or Gulf BMW. The decoder shows the type code's production window instead, which is a range and is labelled as one. Reporting a single year there would be making it up.

Can a BMW VIN be checked for typing mistakes?

Yes, and this is unusual outside North America. BMW computes a conforming check digit at position 9 even though Europe does not require one, and every sampled European BMW and MINI validates against it. So a BMW VIN that fails the test has almost certainly been mistyped, which is a far more useful answer than silence. Mercedes, by contrast, does not compute one, which is why this has to be decided per manufacturer.
